Y avait longtemps.../long time no post...

"I know zilch about art", my client tells me; a big bully of a policeman, "but I am a sentimental bloke you see and I'd like to have a portrait of my faithful companion before he passes away. Hence the portrait above of this nine or ten years old Malinois, grey haired jowls, one or two teeth broken, signs of cataract showing, some rheumatisms, very emaciated at jaws level for lack of biting practice, because the fellow was reknown for it's "mordant", a technical word that means biting and loving every minute of it. A real champion was our pal; even got a medal for it, which will probably end up on the frame of the painting. A fine portrait that is, of the kind I'm not exceedingly familiar with, which I painted joyfully, with a light brush, almost without thinking.
"You've made the ears too big!" the patrolman grumbled; I know my dog mind you! Or perhaps they just look too big, with his now so slender jaws. (Sigh...)
The same sentimental bloke will run heartless behind terrified boat people, letting his bemedaled better half tear through their rags to pin them down for good, galaxies away from even thinking of shedding a tear upon their fright and misery. Obviously there is sentimentality and sentimentality. My definition of the word is not similar to his. Not at the same time anyway; nor upon the same topics.
On an aesthetical point of view now one of our poets thought it pathetic taste to mix body fluids with a cop's wife. Does it apply to portraiting his dog? I didn't care one bit when I was asked. I had never painted Malinois in my life and I just felt like trying once. From the second Malinois onwards I'd get bored; not necessarily from the second cop.

Gros travail...

apparue l’expression « droit à l’enfant ».
Back in the
times when Gay marriage was THE conversation topic in town and elsewhere I lost
no opportunity saying and writing that the coming law shocked me with its form
and with its matter.
Since
almost one hundred per cent of heterosexual pairings lead to the birth of offspring
and since one hundred per cent of homosexual unions cannot lead to any such
thing I am adamant that those two unions should be tagged by a different name.
Marriage for one and something else for the other. So much for the form.
As for the matter I was deeply shocked when
people started giving married folks the “right” to have children. I am now a
married person, no matter with whom, and from then on “I have the right to have children”.
Parents have some rights over their kids all right but absolutely no one has “the
right to have children”. Put this way such a claim, to me, is very dangerous,
very immoral and very pervert.
At the time
I was told that I wasn’t in any position to hold such argument since I had
adopted Moustoifa. But I adopted a grown up; not a child. I had no need for a
child; what I wanted was a posterity. And this descent will be given to me by
Moustoifa (he will have children), his children and the children of his
children who might wonder one day why, black and Moslem as they are, they’re
called Séjour, just like their white and mildly defective ancestor who spent
his life painting pictures. They are the ones who will make my name and works
endure. God’s willing.

Looking forward to tomorrow; that'll be two days taken off the waiting period!
Please meet Kassim; my first mechanic when I had my first car in Mayotte twenty years from here. Typical African Mr Fix it who taught hordes of half naked starving youngster to look properly and smartly into ANY engine. Summerhill type of apprenticeship; all you had to do was not smoking and not drinking. Never had a mechanic for so long. He stills checks and refits my Suzuki. God bless him for as long as he lives. This quick portrait is now his.
More talk later on the driver of mycoupé.

La vie continue.../Life goes on
Deux bonnes semaines à Mutsamudu. Mon rythme habituel.
Two good weeks in Mutsamudu. My usual rythm. Six or seven hours of work in the morning, a little nap and a strollin town in the early evening. The people are friendly, relaxed and talkative. Mostly because there are much fewer white people than in Mayotte. That a nice change.
Mayotte isn't going very well at the moment. Two youths killed in a week following street gangs fights and another one in deep coma. No hope, not one single bit of hope that it will be better in the future.
Meanwhile I keep drawing...

Two days ago a woman custommer stopped in front of my five nudes , turned to me and said, very calmly:" I've never been able to understand why so many artists spend so much time painting nudes." Taken aback I tried to answer rationnally: "One I like nudes; two they're difficult." "You think that's nice!" she said
" Not only do I think that's super nice but with my work I try to prove it."
"You haven't proven anything to me!"
I was in a good day; I didn't answer anything, looked elsewhere and just shrugged my shoulders. She probably was looking for a washing scene by the river, with no tits showing. I never knew what she was doing; not even a teacher would be as narrowminded as that. She was sort of a rarity that woman because virtually everybody likes nudes, and not only children, all fascinated by bare breasts and buttocks. Men, easily aloof in front of a landscape or a still life find a thousand good puns when facing a young naked female body. Nudes practically don't sell, unless one has a confidential turnover of regular custommers. Some artists work mostly on nudes; others, like myself, do it occasionnally. Technically I'm happy when I can paint a credible nude; I thus put my knowledge to the test. On a more affective level I don't mind indulging in what mesmerizes me most and it's great fun to surround myself with young, firm, sweet, soft bodies. Should I effectively be so surrounded I certainly would find it hard to work my usual 10 to 12 hours a day. We'll then wait till we're in Heaven and bugger the prudes meanwhile.
One last word about nudity. I've never noticed that men or women should walk around stark naked when the do their most dreadful things. They put their tie on and wore a clean blous the inventors of A bomb or the administrators of Monsanto or the politicians who declare wars or the generals at Deir Yassin. Yes, definitely yes; bugger the prudes.

One of the latest black and white. There are four others actually, which are paintings close to paintings which were done before. I'll show them next year. (soon)

This is a big one; 2 m x 1,20. It will go to la Réunion in december. Strange how la Réunion has become a topic in conversation lately. As if something should happen there in a short future. We'll see...

Another three days work then two days to tidy up a little and an hour to pack my case; holidays then; almost. It will be different in any case. I'll try to keep a diary during my three weeks there. See you shortly then

Assalam / La paix / Peace
That's what's written on the cover of the book. If my nephew is to be believed since he gave me the arabic word. This is the last one of the paintings I'll take with me to Moroni. It could habe been the first one of them just as well. In the past six years I've painted this subject twice with colours and twice with black and just a little colour. I wanted very much to come to Moroni with this picture. It's all over then. The paintings are off their stretchers, rolled in a plastic tube and my flight is due on Monday the 5th. All that is coming next will be new experience and apprenticeship.

I've done this painting three times. The first one is in Mayotte, the second one is in France and this one may end up in the Comoros. When I asked the dancer from Anjouan to mime what he felt was a slave he just took that pose, which reminded me at once of the attitude Michel Angelo gave to his slaves carved in marble. I now tend to think that the way people of sixteenth century Italy lived with their bodies and how they pictured domination was very close to the feelings of the people from the Comoros in today's time.
